Redefining the “right” path to professional football

For decades the, pathway to professional football was limited. it has always been narrowly defined … play for the right club. enter the youth national team cycle. get seen early. from there, everything should fall into place.

but football careers, are very rarely ever that linear.

As someone who has obviously never played at this level of football, it’s still clear that many of the game’s raw talents were identified young. the big names we grew up watching, were discovered early and elevated their talent quickly. The traditional development model rewarded early exposure, often leaving late bloomers or those who weren’t in front of the right eyes, overlooked.

the nwsl combine is seemingly challenging that reality. centralized, invitation-only sessions are allowing the focus to now encompass current ability. the league seems to be signaling that the talent evaluation does not stop at the youth national team door.

As we know, not every professional player has worn a national team crest. that is what makes the sport so interesting.

Some players grow later. Some attend smaller colleges. Some miss youth national team call-ups due to geography, finances, injury, or timing. Others step away and fight their way back. Until recently, these stories often existed on the margins of mainstream stories or not included at all, because to the casual eye, the national team players were the only faces of the sport.

to counter this point, the nwsl combines include u13-17 and u18-23. Still allowing the young talent to shine through, in addition to the more mature players. Both outside of a national team setting.

The Combine offers something invaluable to these players: intentional exposure.

In a post-draft era, it provides clubs with a structured way to discover talent. theoretically, more potential can be identified, making room for diversity in background, experience, and development timelines. all of which only grow the league.

In a sport that thrives on resilience, the most meaningful pathways are often the ones players carve for themselves. The NWSL Combines aren’t replacing the traditional path, they’re opening additional routes. Women’s football has never been built on a single road, and this new pathway proves just that.

the NWSL’s talent pool is deep, evolving, and far from finite. This isn’t a shift in standard … it’s a wider lens on a game that’s been this good all along.

now, there are simply more roads to get there.

What an incredible message to send to the next generation: there is no single “right” path to chasing your dreams, in this case, you just need an invitation.
